This is the same kind of argument that race car drivers made about the HANS system, that it would take too long to get out of a burning car with that thing on. Their counter argument is that it takes A LOT longer to get out of a burning car with a broken neck. Now everyone's using them.
I've crashed my motorcycle only once, and it was while wearing a helmet. The only part of me that suffered any damage was my knee as it hit the handlebars. The road rash on the face of my helmet means that without it, I wouldn't have much of the left side of my face -- apparently I slid along the ground basically only on my head. Neck was fine.
