In the eight or so years I roadraced, I don't remember anybody getting any severe neck injuries. Fatalities were most often massive trauma, but usually not the head. I take that back, one guy in my class high-sided in front of me at Pocono and broke his neck, but he landed on his head and I suspect would have been killed either way.
