Many thanks for sharing this piece. I read it immediately upon receipt.

 

Much of what the writer discusses touches on areas of which I know nothing or 
very littleβ€”not least being AE’s personal relationships.

 

What did strike me is that the piece seems to be defining reckless and by 
implication β€œexcess” by our 2020 standards. AE lived in an era where many risks 
were taken that would be wholly unacceptable in but a few years. Admittedly she 
lived toward the end of this time, but nevertheless stringent professionalism 
stood out more then than we today appreciate.

 

Also, publicity-seeking and making money from risky (also ill-conceived and 
largely pointless) aviation ventures never really ceased (β€œrisky” in both 
monetary and physical terms). We see this in the news every few weeks.

 

Just adding some perspective. AE’s circumstances seem tragic, interesting, but 
not altogether exceptional.
