Hello Karl,

You are correct. Specific aircraft were in each other’s OpSpec and could not be swapped with any available aircraft. Pax would remain on the aircraft when their destination was beyond SEA. Don’t recall whether both airlines sold seats on all sectors, on the other airline’s flights.

Re: Continental, have to check with a colleague. There may have been a similar arrangement.

Keady may know about something similar when AA DC10s were offered to HA?

All the best,
Amar

AA and AS essentially pooled their aircraft to operate this service. I don’t recall if there were multiple daily frequencies or it took two frames to operate one daily circuit. Back in the day, multii-stop flights were much more common and if it had the same flight number, it was on the same aircraft and you could stow your things and didn’t have to deplane at the intermediate stops, so there was some added benefit to operating the same aircraft from Texas to Alaska rather than exchanging passengers at Seattle.

I seem to remember that Alaska may have had a similar arrangement with Continental airlines to offer Houston-Alaska service via Seattle. With Houston as the hub of the oil industry and Alaska exploration, there was surely a market for such service.

Hello Karl,

AA flight numbers flown by AS crews to/from Alaska, using AA metal. AA flew the DFW-SEA and SEA-DFW sectors.

AS flight numbers flown by AA crews to/from DFW, using AS metal. AS crews flew FAI-ANC-SEA-ANC-FAI sectors.

All the,

Hi Amar!

Surely you have those flipped. If not, how did the AA metal get to SEA so AS pilots could fly it to Alaska?

If flipped, that’s what I expected: each airline using their own metal and pilots.

By “Alaska crews took it over and flew SEA-ANC” do you mean AS crews flew the AA 727 SEA-ANC, or just that they jointly operated a through flight (same flight number) with a change of equipment as well as crews at Seattle?

this reminds me ages ago that AA had an interchange with Alaska Airlines. AA flew the 727 DFW-SEA and Alaska crews took it over and flew SEA-ANC. It worked fine. You don't see many interchanges these days. Guess codeshare ,killed it
