There is no need to password protect something that u want everyone to have access to. Th eonly peice of advice i can give is that if you are going to have an ftp mirror istead of the httpd mirror is that u allow anoymous access. And on the login window that comes up when someone goes to the mirror that they need to log in anonimusly instead of them wasting there time trying to guess how to get in. If you were to follow what is recommened http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html. It is easy to set up and much faster than ftp. I followed the guidlines as stated and have had no problems at all.
