With help from many on and off-list, I finally worked around the freeze issue, by doing the following:
1. went back to 5.0 release 2. in .xinitrc, use "dbus-lunch startxfce4" instead of just "startxfce4. Just in case anyone is still interested in this. Thanks again. - Alan
