About SMP/64bit i must say that i've heard many problems about people
using it.
I stick on 32bit single processor and i can keep 200 users safe. I
prefert to have more then 1 machine... having 1000 users on a
super-single machine is really a worst idea using asterisk.
You should front-end an Openser to it OR switching to Freeswitch.
On another issue, is the misdn team considering to add fax support
(via spandsp or other library) inside the misdn project (over capi
perhaps?)
100% NO because spandsp is GPL and the author will not sign the paper to give
Digium the rights on its own code.
However if you want FAX working the only reliable solution is to use T.38 with
Patton BRI gateway and an FXS adapter that support it (Linksys SPA 2001).
Voip PBX like asterisk are big piece of junk code, if you can hear your voice
at acceptable quality you'll soon find out that the audio from/for faxes is
completly distorted and fax machines suffers from packet loss, jitter,
distortions, etc.
For instance a Ricoh fax of a decent price will alway wors sometimes also using
G.711/T.30 over a plain SIP channell :) while those new kind of
printer/scanner/multifunctions stuff will fail due to their 0.5€ fax on board
chipset.
We usually ask the customers to keep fax on a separate analog line or we use
the analog port from the NT1+ ISDN socket.
