Dear Ronald,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the help.

Yes, I noticed that lav2yuv works on DV2, eg.,
  lav2yuv | yuvplay
works fine.

But what I was looking for is some way to *interactively* step through frames,
while displaying their frame numbers. Glav would be great, but I don't even
need a GUI. Even keyboard commands (forward, back, etc) would be enough, as
long as frame numbers were conveniently displayed.

My objective is to indentify frames interactively, then use some other program,
lav2yuv, or whatever, to extract interesting frames to Jpeg or PPM images.
I do research in image processing and vision, so I want to interactivly
crop the video and extract a couple of hundred frames at a time.

Right now what I do is use some other program, like dv2avi, to make a
(degraded) copy of the movie and use glav on that. Once I find the right
frames I extract from the original DV2 file using dv2jpg.
(Note: Both of these functions are in the "dv2jpg" program at
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/dv2jpg/)

By the way, I noticed that lavplay/lavtrans has some defines (in liblavplay.c)
that say "SUPPORT_READ_DV2". Maybe this doesn't work yet, though.

I also noticed that lavplay (and lavtrans) use different reader routines than
lav2yuv:

LAVPLAY/LAVTRANS: (broken for DV2 video)
  calls "lavplay_get_video", and then "get_video_frame",
            both in liblavplay.c

LAV2YUV: (works for DV2 video)
  calls "readframe" from lav_common.c

I'm not sure why they are different. Perhaps lavplay/lavtrans needs random
access to frames, while lav2yuv just needs to stream the data? Or maybe the
programs are just out of sync. Anyway this puzzled me...

Comments and/or suggestions welcome...

  Richard
