I'd definately consider buying a set of so-so snow tires. I don't think
there's need for something as serious as Blizzaks in DC, as 99% of the time
you'll be miserable because of the eraser-tip ride on dry roads. If you
were in the northeast, midwest or rockies, I'd go for it though...although
I'd probably go for some studded hakkas if they were legal where I live.
Basically, as the temperature drops, summer tires' rubber compound gets
pretty hard and you lose a lot of grip. In fact, I find my D40M2's to be
pretty unsafe at temperatures below about 30 degrees. Below that and my
snows have more cornering traction.
I'm using Pirelli P210's right now, and after a couple of good snowstorms
in michigan and here in boston, I'm pretty darn happy with them. They're
definately not quite as good in snow as my blizzaks were, but they're
close, and they're still great on dry roads.

Anyone have any cold weather startup tips? We're in a particularly cold
snap here in boston, and I have to start the car about four times a day
from dead cold. It definately doesn't like it. At this point, changing
the mobil 1 15w50 out isn't an option as I'd freeze to death before the new
oil went in, and the weather CAN'T stay this cold much longer. Block
heaters would be nice, but I don't have a power hookup out to the car.
However, I did try pouring some 15w50 mobil 1 at 4 degrees F (MFA) this
morning and it actually poured pretty darned well! Much better than a dino
oil in 10w30 or 5w30! Neat.

I always feel so guilty asking the car to start on cold mornings. It's so
loyal and trustworthy that I feel abusive.
