i replaced a rear hydro mount with a solid one, figuring it would be a
similar situation as the front mount. i dont know about actual
vibration (i wasnt really getting any to begin with...changing the
mounts was a "while you're in there" thing) but the solid mount
*definately* allowed for more engine movement. it was a noticible
amount, whether you were revving the engine or just grabbing it by the
manifold and pushing/pulling on it.

was it designed to last longer? i have no doubt. visual inspection of
various used rear mounts will show that. was it designed to have less
vibration? probably. like i said, i didnt notice any difference in
the vibration department, but i would imaging the hydro mount has much
better damping qualities to it.

the fatal flaw in the front hydro mount is the fact that it, by nature,
is getting ripped aprart every time the engine moves. all the other
mounts (including the solid front mount) are compressed, and are less
suceptible to fatigue.

funny story...when i bought my 92 in may, i noticed a HELL of alot of
engine flex. the front mount was pooped. i tried to install my 6 month
old solid mount from my 87 parts car, but the threads were screwed up
and so was the bracket, and i didnt have tome to get it welded properly.
so a buddy scored a hydro mount from the dealer he works at (one of
those "lying in the back corner" deals) and i installed that. its
okay. definately better than the other one. and hell, it was free.
okay...so when i took the old mount out and turned it upside down, all
of the fluid poured out of it. (i guess it coulda been rainwater too)
just flipping that mount would send the stud out about an inch.

yikes!
