When I was removing the rear seats of my 16V GTI we found the
actual build/spec sheet. It lists the car as an 1986 16V etc. etc. My car
was one of 5? "Firehawk" racers the competed in the valvoline firehawk
series in the late 80's. Pictures are posted at
http://www.vicon.net/~bvw/PicGall.html. Hopefully I still have the build
sheet somewhere. I know that at least 2 other of these cars has
survived. Both have retained the original paint scheme, one at least was
listed on the 16V registry several years ago.

I have it from a very reliable source that there were indeed a very limited
number of 1986 GTI 16Vs in the USA. These 1986 GTI 16Vs were built as
"test mules" used by VW engineers for all kinds of testing.
Somewhere I believe I have information from my source that describes how
to identify one of these 1986 GTI 16V test vehicles.
In other parts of the world, there were also GTI 16Vs prior to 1987.
Those models varied from country to country based on where that country's
VWs were assembled.
