Not really, this is this car's old problem.

'89 GLI, problem is this: SOMETIMES, probably one in four times you start and run the car, it seems to be in "limp" mode. Say 80% power, kind of hesitates a bit, does not really like to rev. Idles a little low (say about 100-200 rpm's lower than normal) and has very poor throttle response. Generally, I'd say if you hadn't driven it with it running right, regularly, you'd never notice it was screwed up.

Restarting the car clears the problem. If the car's rolling, just switching the key to "off" and back to "on" while coasting in gear will clear the problem.

This car has exhibited this problem, according to the PO who is a coworker of mine, ever since it was new. There's a long repair list of things that have been done to it in effort to fix it. Now it's starting to irritate me, since the car runs so good so much of the time now.

Any clues what it is? Seems to be computer related, since a "reboot" fixes it. I have replaced the knock sensor and the fuel transfer pump, and the VW shop where the car lived for over two weeks recently said they "checked everything" in search of the elusive broken wire and verified it all 100% operational.

Dang intermittent problems!
