Replacing the switch isn't too difficult, especially since it's been
replaced before.  Remove the plastic steering column surrounds to get a
better look at the switch.  Chances are that there's a small hole in the
housing already that will allow you to release the switch - otherwise you'll
have to drill a hole in a predescribed spot to allow you to remove the
switch (I don't remember the exact location, check the Bentley's manual).

In 14 yrs of ownership, I've never experienced an ignition switch failure. 
Do you have several thousand keys on your ring?  If so, the weight may be
causing a failure.  Otherwise, you're just falling victim to the marvels of
Volkswagen electronics.
