I know its hike as well, but Beetlepower in Pleasanton in ridiculous as
well.  Again, not the cheapest, but I actually trust them more than ND.  A
tad bit closer as well...

Do you know when the timing belt and tensioner were changed last?  If it's
kind of a "roller skate wheel" type of noise, it may be your tensioner.  If
you don't know how many miles are on your timing belt/tensioner, CHANGE IT
ASAP!  If the belt breaks/slips, you could be looking at a whole bunch of
new valves (like 16), and, possibly, some new pistons.
I don't know of any shops in the Sacto area, but they must exist.  If you
want to come to the Bay Area, New Dimensions is excellent, albeit a little
pricey, for some people.
