I hear you. I've had TWO windshields broken by rocks flying
out of dump trucks on the freeway. The second occurance was
last September and my insurance company paid for replacement
under comprehensive. Luckily, I got to watch the guy do it, and
it's really not that hard.
Here's the short story. The car needs to be on level ground, so
the body isn't being flexed at all. The old rubber seal is stripped
away from around the windshield with a metal digging tool (for
lack of a proper name). After the old windshield is punched
out, the new one is set in place with LOTS of black silicon, and
new weatherstripping is applied inside and out. The weather-
stripping has to set for a few days.
I'm sure it looked a lot easier than it is, but it still seemed
doable for the cash-strapped or insurance-deprived. You can
probably get US or Mexican glass for a cheaper price...I got
the German glass since the insurance was paying. :)
