After various suggestions from everyone (thanks for responses all) I just pulled off the chrome strips on the bumper, sanded and painted the door handle trim and painted the chrome VW emblem in the grille. I used Krylon paint which works well. The car looks much better and is almost a real head turner now. The dark blue body paint with the total black trim goes very well together. Amazing how small details make a big difference. Bad thing is that it now looks better than my clean but stock GTi.
