I'm actually planning on getting a set too. I decided to get these tires after consulting a friend. He drives an 81 Scirocco running a 2.0l 16V ported and polished, TT race downpipe, poly bushings everywhere, interior gutted, gel battery mounted in the car, brake bias control and 174HP at the crank. This guy drives his car hard every day and has blown three 16V engines (that I know of) in the last 2 years. He use to swear by Yoko A520's and purchased a set of Kumho ECSTA 712's over a year ago and hasn't looked back.
Within the next month I will be purchasing these tires.
