Possible bad news here. This weekend I was driving my 16v on a short
trip and while getting onto the onramp two exits from my house I heard a
backfire and then the engine went dead.

Luckily, I was able to roll to the grass on the side of the highway.
Once there I popped the hood to check for anything obvious and
everything looked the same. I then tried to crank it and see what
happens. It will crank but not turn over. I checked the cam/timing
belt and it didn't seem broken.

I towed the car back to my house and am waiting to have some time to
check it out more carefully.

How can I check if the timing belt went? Would it be super obvious? I
guess it could also be the fuel pump? What other things should I check?

Thanks guys,

Larry
