clean clean clean. no leftover remnants of past gaskets and/or gasket material..
very thin application of black or silver rtv in all the sharp corners..
I do not own an in/lb torque wrench, and have yet todevelop oil leaks on a fresh gasket install.. Also, once you apply the rtv, wait a few minutes for it to "skin over", then apply. Else, you just squish the rtv out of the joint and create a moot point.

Subject: Re: [a2-16v-list] 16v Distributor oil leak

Maybe the oil is coming from above and it just looks like the distributor
is the source? I replaced my distributor a few weeks ago but the valve
cover gasket still leaks a little.

Anyway, can someone suggest the best way to seal the valve cover gasket?
I need to get one of those inch-pound torque wrenches to make sure I am
getting it just right I guess. I put a little bit of rtv sealer around
the 1/2 moon things a few years ago but it stil leaked a bit and I've
never fixed it.
