I don't remember the Mk3 transaxle codes but the 4-cylinder Mk3 cars had the 
"16v trans" which had the larger input shaft than the 8v trans.  That having 
been said, I'd suggest finding an 8v trans and having it rebuilt with a bolt 
kit 
- total cost would probably be the same and from what I can tell, the Mk3 
transaxles aren't necessarily any more reliable than the early 020 boxes.  

I'm currently using an 8v trans with a 3.94 FD and a .71 5th gear - the net 
effect is that the car is tonnes of fun around town and it quiets down 
significantly at highway speeds (2500ish at 55 mph).  It sucks for hills but 
power is just a quick downshift away.
