Both the Fujimi and GTI Cup models were not widely available when I got them in the early to mid 1990s because they had been discontinued.

The Schbak diecasts like the one in my photo were sold through VW Dealers IIRC. I also have the A2 Jetta Schbak diecast models as well.

Funny you mentioned the VW Kiddies giving you grief about "hurting your baby". For many years some of those kiddies were constantly telling me to modify the hell out of my GTI 16V.

The Fujimi model looks familiar. I was at my parents' house over the weekend but didn't take an opportunity to look at the model very closely.

I do like the GTI Cup model - I don't remember seeing that before but have one racing contact who ran that series and another who has one of the original cars. They were 8v cars and to say they're slow would be a bit of an understatement since they were truly showroom stock cars at that time.

It amuses me to think of the cars as "antique". I especially find humor in the kiddies (VW Vortex springs to mind) who chastize me for "hurting my baby". If I'd wanted a show car, I'd have fixed up my 19K mile Thunderchicken but it was always more fun to create new holes and "drive it like I stole it".

Did VW offer models of the A2 cars to dealers? I have a "dealership" model of my Audi V8 which isn't completely accurate but it's 1/43 scale and with my aging eyes, it looks absolutely perfect <G>.

Matthew,

By Chance is this the model you are talking about?

The wheels, Headlight & Grill are not accurate. The rest of the model is a almost an EXACT match to my 1987 GT 16V minus a few small things I added.

Here is one that you could have built like The General Li.

Here is a Diecast I have. It is a four door model which has a few things that a stock GTI 16V never came from the factory with.

I also have the matchbox version somewhere here in the house.

Speaking of my GTI 16V, earlier this month I took her to the largest Antique Automobile Show in the United States. People from around the world come to Hershey, Pennsylvania for this event. At the car show event, I spoke with several VW techs from back in the day. They told me some interesting tales about fixing the GTI 16V. Also got to talk with a gentleman who was an engineer for VWoA back in the day. He told me he had one of the original 500, GTI 16V "test mules" that VWoA put together back in 1985/86.

I might be willing to offer my GTI 16V for the stock version of this little project we are discussing. Doubt there are many left like mine having 100% of the OEM parts and 99+% of the original parts.

Charlie

Someone made a 1/24 scale model many years ago but it was a Euro model with small bumpers and round headlamps. It's still at my parents' house, unfinished because I ran out of time/patience about 20 years ago. As I age, hobbies such as model building suit my sedentary lifestyle BUT the parts are getting so damn small and fuzzy that I can't see them.

Speaking of 3D printer models, I watched a show on how they work and the concept is incredibly cool. That'd be awesome to have a GTi 16v model produced in that manner, especially one in Hemi Orange with the Stars & Bars on the roof but I digress.
