presumably so that he doesn't have to port his cgi programs to servlets. i'm pretty sure tomcat has the capability to execute cgi programs, but that doesn't buy you the acceleration you get with mod_perl. it's probably worth the original poster's time to figure out how to get apache working with ssl so he can continue to use mod_perl. his only other realistic choice is using something like xml-rpc (or maybe even http) from tomcat to a (non-ssl) backend apache/mod_perl.
