I think I might have an idea ... I reckon MSIE (the version I'm using, v4) fails to cope with the server's attempt to negotiate the level of encryption. I think the following is fairly close to accurate: - Some browsers hit the server with 128-bit capability and get the 128-bit cert. Some older browsers hit the server with a default 40 or 56 -bit capability and begin to handshake at that level, then the server tries its 128-bit cert to see if the browser can handle the step-up. If it can then the session actually occurs at 128-bit and all is well. If it can't then it's supposed to continue at 40- or 56- bits. My MSIE v4 seems to barf at this point. Some old browsers just do the lot at 40-bits and leave it at that.
