Hi Marcus.
There is no way to applay mod_ssl without downtime because mod_ssl have to 
apply "patches" to Apache Server Core Code.
Therefore, you will have to stop your server.
But to minimize the downtime, you can build the new server into another 
directory tree and after testing it you can install it.
I can help you in this process, if you want.

What´s the version of the current Apache Server you are using?

The pre-requisits are:
1) Get Apache Source Code Distribution, for example, version 1.3.12
2) Get the latest version of openssl
3) Get the mod_ssl distribution needed to the version of Apache, choosed on 
step 1.
4) Get the latest version of Source Code of library MM
