I've got /that/ problem figured out: when copying the elements from an existing version object as a optimization, I was neglecting to copy the {original} element of the hash. It only affected the XS code (the pure Perl code was too stupid to be optimized). I'm releasing 0.7202 momentarily, since this is a serious problem. Patch to Module::Build coming soon...
