Cluth master cylinder on my +4 failed - no fluid leaks, just got slightly harder to engage gear sometimes, occasionally the car would start to move away without me taking foot off clutch pedal.
Stall test is good move first, but I'll lay odds on the master cylinder... That would show up slip. Essential you have clear space in front of you and if possible front wheels chocked, apply handbrake fully on and if possible also heal and toe to hold the foot brake and accelerator to get about 2000RPM on a warm engine and the car in 4th gear. Take your foot sharply off the clutch and see if the engine stops almost immediately, if it does the clutch is not slipping. If that's the case I would look at the clutch master cylinder, you say no fluid leaks and that's normally associated with a faulty slave (but they can fail without leaking but rare). Its totally possible and sad to say not uncommon for the master cylinder to fail giving the condition you state without leaking fluid. I must admit the first thing I would do is bleed the clutch, well, get a full fluid change as the master cylinder can hold all kinds of crud and the fluid absorbs water just the same as brake fluid but we never change the clutch fluid do we? ;-). If all that fails and it s slipping then you asked about access, its an engine out I am afraid, not that massive task if you have or can hire an engine beam hoist. Good luck and let us know what you find. BR Colin On 17 July 2012 15:53, David Jones <[email protected]> wrote: David That was my first thought, but can't think what else it might be. I have a 1998 4-4 with 30,000 miles on the clock. I took the Mog out today and noticed the clutch pedal travel seemed to be getting longer and longer, or to be more precise the take up of the clutch is very close to the floor. I guess it must be new clutch time, however in the past with other vehicles a slipping clutch was the sign of a worn out clutch and not pedal travel. That said, I had to replace the clutch on the Defender some time ago and if I recall that was also pedal travel rather than slipping. So a few questions, do the symptoms suggest a new clutch and is it an engine out job or can it be tackled from underneath? I have checked the fluid levels are they are fine.
