Makes sense, but the first email said there was no problem with direct
operation. Granted the battery or earth could be so marginal as to work ok
on a direct connection but with the added load of a relay coil, causes it to
drop out and start buzzing. However a relay coil is a pretty small load,
otherwise you'd not fit one.

My guess is the relay, not the solenoid, is dropping out when the starter
operates, so stops and causes the buzzing. But from what was said, I'd think
on low voltage the relay drops out before the solenoid, hence working ok on
a direct connection.

A Morgan of that age could easily have a duff earth, so attention to the
earth lead may well cure the problem. But I'm still inclined to think the
relay has been added, and is an owner modification. As a result I'd still
look into this as although improving the earth or high current feed may cure
the problem, if the relay is not really needed, it would be a simpler, hence
more reliable car without.

Somebody must have a wiring diagram for the car?

Guys

Late to this, Brian is right, a buzzing solenoid is nearly always a low
battery voltage or a duff earth. The following should help diagnose.

Get some jump leads

Attach one end of one lead to the engine block/bell housing is fine, just
get a good earth. Attach the other end of that lead to the battery Negative
terminal. Try to start the car, if it starts its a bad earth lead, not
exactly unknown, just fit another (mine has 3).

If that does not work just jump the battery from a known running car
battery, remember to connect one lead at a time! If that does not work.....

Take the positive lead from the jump leads off the battery and connect
direct to the starter solenoid large cable input stud (just clamp it on) if
that fixes it you have a major voltage drop in the main supply lead (very
unlikely and rarely seen).

If all else fails give the starter solenoid a sharp rap with a metal
bar/large socket extension/small hammer to see if its sticking through lack
of use.

My money would be a bad earth caused by a corroded earth strap, most of
these problems are caused by that.

Hope that helps.

Colin
