Miscellany is a reflection of the copy Charles Neal gets from the members of MSCC. I was for almost 10 years editor of the newsletter for the Scottish Centre and relied heavily on asking member to do me a report on our events etc. This they did almost without exception willingly. He has a set amount of space to fill and has also to keep his advertisers sweet as they cover much of the costs.
In the 20 years I have had Morgans I seen a vast move upmarket with the introduction of the Aero and subsequent iterations of same. Technological changes which have been incorporated into the engine management side of the cars, the extended service periods stipulated by engine manufacturers which of course require expensive diagnostic tools don't encourage the owners to get their hands even a little bit dirty. Hence the average Morgan owner now takes their car to the dealer. Besides the competent home mechanic cannot actually do much apart from greasing the front end, checking levels and pressures without access to the diagnostics. The engines require little or no maintenance apart from oil & filter changes. Changing shoes, pads or discs is a fairly infrequent task, as is rebuilding a front end. Looking for dodgy earths, well that's more common excercise! Yes it would be nice to see some technical pieces but of the 4000 MSCC members I doubt if more than a handful would be pleased appreciate them. The editor produces the magazine with the majority of the members in mind and unless we with oil under our nails send him appropriate copy he cannot publish it! I agree that there are many reasons for owning a Morgan. It seems that the club (MSCC) cannot reflect all of them. I renewed my membership this year with a note stating that it had been a marginal decision with the content of Miscellany a major negative factor. I received a reply (positive factor) requesting that I submit a technical article myself. This was, perhaps, a reasonable response although I am aware of others with impressive CVs in the field of automobile engineering who have submitted technical articles without any acknowledgement, much less publication. I am inclined to think that the "Sports" in MSCC should be replaced by "Social". I doubt that I will renew again.
