Some of them may indeed be lazy and/or incompetent. However NO
franchised dealer will depart from factory procedures when trying to
resolve an emissions fault. It's frankly illegal to do so. And
workarounds are positively taboo. I'll agree than many are boneheaded
though. And my old Chief Tech could resolve anything ultimately,
although sometimes it wasn't cheap. We always tried the cheap route first. ;-)
No idea why Owen's car throws the occasional multiple misfire code.
Land Rover V8's which do this don't suddenly stop doing it for a
while. They do it until the issue is resolved, most often carbon on
the intake valves. A full tank of fuel with BG CF-5 sometimes works.
(Housewives and local only driving were the main cause and at 50,000
- 75,000 miles. ;-) ) Two other steps we could take, and then the
heads have to come off for a clean. Owen's ECU is apparently doing
this for some other unrelated reason and nothing to do with either
Gaydon or SAGEM.

Fair point. I wasn't having a go at you for not finding the code, by
the way. I am often struck by just how lazy some of the big dealers
are. a mate of mine works in a small non-franchised garage, and he
tells me they get this a lot - someone comes to them in despair with
a recurring fault that the main dealers can't seem to fix, they do a
bit of phoning round and research on the internet, and can usually
come up with a fix or a workaround.
Seems to me that if it's not in the standard manuals or it's not
covered in the standard service sheets, the big boys either can't or
won't do anything.
Maybe whoever looked at your car knew what the code was supposed to
mean, but was unable to pin down exactly what was causing it.
