Bill I have iPods and like them very much and all works fine except my newer iPod does not charge with my older docks and when can I go into iTunes and not have yet another time consuming update. I have iTunes on my old club computer which I know is getting a bit geriatric but the latest update crashes after I import a CD. Yesterday I got my BBC Music mag which had a free download from iStore but I had to open an account all went fine until I waited for the verification email. It never came so I rang Apple - bad move it is totally human less operating on voice recognition I told voiced the problem answer "what apple hardware are you talking about". It drove me nuts in the end it was sorted by email but what a totally inflexible system.
I have just been searching through some floppy discs for some old files, firstly the drive still worked and the files loaded after an age! My latest is the new iPad which is an amazing bit of kit. Even Liz of the "What on earth have you bought that for?" response to my gadget buying is sold on this one. I know Bill is a converted Mac man and they are very beautiful machines and like all Apple products expensive. Your reference to dBase reminds me that the entire technical records of the Imperial War Museum were on dBase and only very recently transferred to some other programme. On my original "club" computer had full Office with Access but found it completely impenetrable. I find Excel does all I need. One day I will have to dig out my old BBC B which was a great machine, for its time. Programming was easy and very friendly but how did we ever survive on 32K memory!!
