I´m guessing this is all pukka and if so, is one of the funniest threads I´ve
read here, you couldn´t make it up, I´m guesing this girl called Elizabeth from
Montana, USA has no problems being put up in the greenhouse despite the fact
that it is snowing ? This really is surreal

Hi Ed,
The only variety of clematis native to Britain is C. vitalba, commonly known
as Old Man's Beard, appropriately enough. Of course, if we want to cause
Mike to froth at the mouth we could use its other name of Virgin's Bower.

Meanwhile, Lady Cholmondeley (Chumley to you, Mike) is climbing my trellis
like a pole dancer. (Mike has to taken to intensive care.) My, you should
see her large, juicy buds just ready to burst! (Bring on the defibrillator.)

On a more serious note, the curious weather we've had brought on all the
atragene group early this year. C. macropetala has done spectacularly.
There's a picture I took of it a few years ago on Clematis on the Web.

The relatively mild winter meant that all my montanas have made it though
the winter, for a change. The last two winters all above ground growth was
killed. I bought a new one, Elizabeth, last year and have kept it in the
greenhouse. It has been covered in bloom for about 3 weeks. It is also sweet
scented. Now I need to find a warm spot to plant it out. Some hopes!

C.m. grandiflora is now about 6 years old and has never had a flower bud on
it until this year. If the weather continues as it is, they may all drop off
without opening.

The early large flowering varieties have all suffered badly as a result of
being encouraged to romp away early by the March warm spell, then they've
been cut back with a combination of frost and clematis wilt. Some have yet
to show any new sign of life - Niobe in particular, which has been a
spectacular performer for the last 3 years, has not re-appeared above soil
level, having originally got off to an early start in March.

Finally, to cheer everyone up, here's a picture of Jacqueline du Pré.

Cheers,
Owen.
