Jim- I guess if you were happy with the characteristics of the boat before, I keep things about the same. I'm guessing that maybe you didn't measure all of the keel ballast, and I'd suggest that you put in about 225 to 250 lbs of lead to make it about the same as before. 300 lbs really wouldn't hurt, tho- it'd affect the light air performance just a bit, and help it in a blow. Have you ever loaded up the boat for a cruise; a hundred pounds of water stored really low in the boat, and maybe 50 lbs of other stuff, also stored low? I used to do this in Mexico, and the boat gets noticably stiffer (good for cruising) and maybe a bit sluggish in a drifter, but not all that much. Loaded up, it's well over it's designed dissplacement but it has the kind of lines that make it very forgiving to things like that. When the boat gets loaded up it really wants to carry the weight forward to keep the transom out of the water.
