Good cast iron won't bend; it's kind of brittle, actually.  When the foundry
delivered CB's to us you wouldn't believe the way they treated them; they
just dumped them out on the concrete, and we never had one bend or break.
Measure the thickness of the CB (should be under 7/8" if I remember
correctly, then make a wood spacer the same width and stick it up in the
trunk.  Good luck!
