Interesting range of adjustment. Then I read the info at the link Howard posted. Good stuff. Right at the bottom, last contribution, is Mike Leonard. He found, just like me, that a foot or so of rake was too much and something closer to 4" seemed about right to him. I was thinking it was because my main is non stock config and has a big ass roach. Mike said the same thing. That's because it turns out I now own his boat (though I bought it from the guy who bought it from him ).......silly business that.
As I am currently adjusted, perfect amount of stick from ghosters up to reef time. And sometimes the first change is just one in the main and leave the 155 up. With the backstay cranked (and depending on displacement of self propelled ballast) I can carry the 155 a lot longer and go faster. Though by the time I need to take that guy down I can usually maintain the same speeds with the 100, get my butt off the coaming and incur less spillage. Thing is, if she is set up just right....you know full and well when change time has arrived. BTW Mike bought that North racing main (5.6 oz) in 2000. (the boat came with a folder of paper) I sent it in to North in Vancouver last winter to have them evaluate it and correct anything they could, they sent it back almost untouched. They suggested it was in stellar shape. The sail is a beauty. Tapered battens and the lot. Love it.
