agg-sharp already has part of hardware acceleration through TAO.OpenGL. Cairo is really large project and it's hard to help it become hardware accelerated, while agg-sharp is simple and that can be done much simpler.
agg-sharp also much faster than cairo in software mode and has better output quality.
