Saw BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN in San Francisco with a pretty much all-gay
audience...well, I wasn't sure about the guy sitting in front of me, but
I'm guessing....and we were ALL sniffling at the end of the film. The
gay relationship between the two cowboys adds an edge to a beautifully
done film that ultimately is about the consequences of denying what is
in your heart. Larry McMurtry co-wrote the screenplay, and he's one
writer who gets just the right resonance to stories about human
interaction. I will certainly be checking out more of Ang Lee's films.
Brilliant.
That being said, for whatever reason, the rump-wrangling scene in the
first half-hour did indeed make this hetero male feel a tad
uncomfortable. (My father-in-law went with my mother-in-law to see the
film, not knowing what it was about. During the aforementioned scene, he
blurted out, "OH MY GOD!!!", completely embarrassing my dear
mother-in-law. He ended up thoroughly enjoying the film. )
And David...is Kusumoto Japanese for "shit-disturber"? (Although as
a shameless gossip-lover, I was hoping to find out what's up with some
of our MOPO members. Sorry, guys. Color me shallow, but I was curious too.)
