The most bizarre aspect of the first release of SPARTACUS in Australia (in it's
original roadshow release) was that while the film had some of the (then) more
violent scenes cut by the censor, the infamous prawns and oysters scene
remained intact, and as an 11 year old watching the film enthralled completely
in what was really the best historical epic to date with none of that religious
stuff between sea battles and chariot races that had made BEN-HUR (then for an
11 year, soemthing of a tedious experience) I was somewhat bemused in the
"snails" scene, when some bloke behind me said quite loudly, JEEZZ..... HE'S A
POOFTAH!
Ah, of such things are the educative process are made.

Pretty interesting how Kirk Douglas flew in the face of 1960 Hollywood and
gave Dalton Trumbo screenplay credit (the same year Preminger hired him to
script EXODUS also under his own name and not the fronts he'd used for years
after HUAC).
Part of Ring Lardner Jnr's eulogy for Trumbo is worth repeating here.
