Rich, my two cents...
Shatner RULES!
I think he's brilliant in his own way.
I always thought of 'hacks' as those who were unaccomplished due to
lack of talent. Now some fail forward in Hollywood
as in any business regardless of their lacking talent, but whether
you like Shatner or not, I'd use a more specific adjective
to describe him; H-A-M. But he does have talent and is particularly
good in many roles.
But a ham unchecked is pathetic and unwatchable, while Shatner is
supremely watchable as he 'gets' the joke and milks it.

I would think the ultimate definition/example of hack would be
Leena Lamont in "Singin' In The Rain". Right on target!!!

I need to know the definition of a "hack" as we are talking silent
films here. Is overacting considered being a
hack? I just figured the presence of overacting/sentimentality
was the rule of the day in silent films. I can hear
the directors shouting through their megaphones, "Once again, with
BIGGER feeling!"

but Jeff, wait a second.. yes, she was a "founding mother", but
have you ever seen her films..
she was a hack actress
now I do think that her Award for being a founding mother is
deserved for what it is..
but as hacks go, she was-a-hacking
not quite as much of a hack as William Shatner maybe.. but hack
is hack is hack

i agree, tom.. but seriously... who is this guy to be insulting
and call her a hack (or any name for that matter)? that is
totally uncalled for.
it shows what ignorance and stupidity there is out there.
here's just a brief summary of this "hack":
Mary Pickford was an Academy Award-winning Canadian motion
picture star, as well as a co-founder of the film studio United
Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Known as "America's
Sweetheart," "Little Mary" and "The girl with the curls," she
was one of the first Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood and
one of film's greatest pioneers.
Her influence in the development of film acting was enormous.
Because her international fame was triggered by moving images,
she is a watershed figure in the history of modern celebrity.
And as one of silent film's most important performers and
producers, her contract demands were central to shaping the
Hollywood industry. In consideration of her contributions to
American cinema, the American Film Institute named Pickford 24th
among the greatest female stars of all time.

Hi Channing:
You best not say that publicly since it would upset the ghost

The real crime is that a hack actress like Mary Pickford ever

an Oscar!
There, I said it!
