Well, Steve, it certainly was Carol Lawrence in West Side Story.  Easy
mistake.

And, though I admired Gertrude Lawrence greatly, as a southerner and actor I
must protest that Gertie was mordantly miscast in "Glass Menagerie."  As was
(with the exception of the slightly-too-old Jane Wyman) the rest of the cast.

Tennessee Williams hated the film, but there is irony in it.
When Tennessee first wrote "Menagerie," it was as a treatment for a possible
film by MGM, for whom he was employed for a number of months.  MGM rejected
it.
Tennessee later remarked, "...when 'Menagerie' was up for bid, MGM was one of
the studios wanting it the most. A few years earlier they could have had it for
the price of my salary ($250.00 a week!)"

Okay Joe & Michael,

The mistake was obvious.  Just a careless slip.  The Broadway Maria in West
Side Story was played by Carol Lawrence, not Gertrude Lawrence.

Gertrude Lawrence was outstanding as Amanda in The Glass Menagerie.
