There's another mystery about the sock hop scene. At the dance, there are all
the Sharks and Jets with their girlfriends, and there is a black couple in the
background throughout the scene. Given that there are no other blacks in the
movie, and that this couple appears nowhere else, why were they there? Bruce
That reminds me of the skit in Woody Allen's "Everything You Always Wanted to
Know About Sex." In the "fuselage" scene -- with all these white guys dressed
up as sperm cells bouncing off one another, ready to be "launched," so to speak
-- (complete with some guy playing a harmonica in the background) -- a lone
black guy in a white sperm cell costume asks, with great befuddlement, "what am
I doing here? what am I doing here?"
