I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937
Monogram picture
has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

I'll certainly drink to that!

Subject: Re: [MOPO] My question to 300+ of you: Why are you a lurker on MoPo?

I don't, as a rule, have much of value to contribute to discussions on posters, at least not with dealers or hard core collectors. I collect 16mm films, and will buy some advertising art to display for each of the films in my collection. I don't have the wall space for more than a couple of 1 sheets,
but I do like title cards, and have quite a few of them scattered about.

I find some of the debates fun to read, but there are so many strong opinions, and many of them
ill-informed - that offering some commentary would just not be productive.

Also - my personal tastes are not in line with the apparent collective thinking of the group. I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937 Monogram picture
has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Also, I place no value on posters from films made in the last 30 - 40 years, probably because, for the most part, I place no value on the movies made during that time period. I can't watch bad movies, there just isn't enough time - I don't think Ed Wood produced enjoyable films - just bad ones - and I haven't
seen all the good movies out there yet, so why waste my time.

Also I generally shun movies (and pop culture) that achieved the highest accolades from the general public. for example - movies I just don't like include: 2001, My Fair Lady, Lawrence of Arabia, How the
West was Won, Gone with the wind, Maltese Falcon (1941), Fantasia

movies I think are under-rated include: John Wayne's Alamo (but ONLY the full version - preferably the
Laser), All I Want For Christmas, Once Upon A Time, Port of Seven Seas.

My Favorite films (and just cause I like 'em, does not mean I think they are great movies): Rhubarb, About Face, Inherit the Wind, A Matter of Life and Death, Maltese Falcon (1931),
It Happened Tomorrow

These are in no way comprehensive lists, but are offered to give some idea on how my tastes run, and how different they are from the "conventional wisdom". Its the same with music - I could listen to Mario Lanza all day long - I find luciano pavarotti over blown. I prefer Norman Rockwell to Picasso, Rembrant to Van Gough and just about anybody to Keanu Reeves (the black hole of cinema). I believe Will Farrell is as funny as a cry for help, and Britney Spears is as entertaining as watching paint dry.

so it goes

now you see why I keep my mouth shut (metaphorically typing :-)?

Bill

thought it would be nice to give these people a chance to come out of the shadows (so to speak), if only for a single post, to explain why they never post, and to see what it is about MoPo that makes them want to stay members, even though they never contribute. Now of course we know that the dealers who solely post for sale or for auction posts are here for the free advertising, but how about the rest of you?
