Traditionally, collectibles (real collectibles, that is, not market-hyped fake collectibles) have done well in recessionary environments. They may not go up in price as fast as they did during "good times", but they tend to hold their value well when other things are declining dramatically. I think that's what we see happening with movie posters. Some have declined in price a bit (but this is probably more those particular titles "going out of fashion") and others have gone up slightly (fashion and age-trends again?).

In the case of the a genuine super-rare item, such as The Black Cat poster auctioned by Heritage last week, the price will almost always go up, regardless of what's happening in the overall economy. Collectors will still buy for their collections when they don't have money for anything else. It's one of the things that defines a true collector.
