Franc,
Under the current system using your hypothetical auction item starting at $45 and receiving one bid you are correct. You would pay a $1.00 listing fee and a final value fee of $2.89, for a total of $3.89. Under eBay's upcoming model using the same item you would pay a .75¢ listing fee and a final value fee of $4.05 (9%), for a total of $4.80
That is a 23% increase in fees for each sale you make at $45.00

Dave is correct, that for people who list lots of items in their fixed price stores there probably will not be a lot of change.

What it will have an affect on is the few of us that still sell our own material in true no-reserve auctions with low starting prices - mainly Marty Davis and myself. I have run a monthly auction for about three years now and only once did I use any sort of a fixed-price format. I will definitely have to re-think that strategy in the future, as current eBay policy is designed to herd you into setting up fixed-price stores, not to hold auctions and let the market decide prices like the site was founded upon.

Sean--- IF you list an item for $45, the listing fee is not $.10, it's
$1.00 and the final value fee is $2.89. Your total commission to Ebay is
$3.89, which equals 8.64% Of course there's always the risk that you'll
not sell the item and you'll be out $1 for the listing. I'd rather pay
the higher commission. Of course that's going to depend on how low those
incredible new fees are going to be. FRANC

How many dealers are listing items for .99¢ or less?
Not many.
So the trade off for a slight reduction in listing fees is that for
items
selling for $25 or more where eBay used to take 3.5% of the final
selling
price for their commission, they will now take a full 9% up to a $50
cap? That's a pretty substantial jump.

I'd much rather pay the .10¢ listing fee and keep that extra 5.5% of the

final selling price.
Very poor trade-off in my opinion.

Will definitely affect my listings for this upcoming year.

Hi Richard --- I have to disagree with you on this one. I think most
dealers would prefer this, especially if you list for $.99 or under
for which there will be no listing fees. If you list at a price above
$.99, the insertion fees will be drastically reduced. I think this is
a smart move because the dealer only winds up paying a 9% commission
if the item sells.

http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/news/FeeUpdate2010.html#nsf

those jokers are doing the most they can to make it as useless an
engine as anything could possibly be

they're knocking out certain listing fees and charging you a whopping
9% on items over $25 in final value fees

I can hear that dirge playing already.
