So why don't you open them and set them free?

I'm so glad that this discussion is taking place.  As I mentioned before,
I do have some slabbed stills - in fact I have three.  They're all
gorgeous and ones I had never seen before, so I tried it.  Truth is, this
slabbing is really troubling to me.   Beautiful original stills (lobbies,
midget window cards) suffocating in ugly plastic with Very Fine and
Entertainment stamped off to the side.  I've been collecting movie paper
since I was fourteen and other than the obvious mission of gathering pieces
from actors and films that are personally meaningful,  the hobby has
always been one of aesthetics and time travel.  Somehow, I can't imagine
feeling that way over movie paper sealed in plastic.

I had a look at the CGC website and, to
me, the prices quoted are prohibitive.

Lets take the current Heritage
Auction.

There is a set of Dirty Harry Lobby cards that have
all been individually slabbed. Estimate is approx $600.00. If you consigned
that
set you would have to factor in the following cost of slabbing:

    Standard
    15 business days

    $20 per card
     $130 per
set

Add to that the premium, tax and postage
and it would not be worth selling the set if it sold for anything close to the
estimate.

Of course there may be an argument that
slabbed cards will achieve higher prices that unslabbed cards but I wouldn't be
taking the risk.

John
