Deke was a master. And yes, there was a "mint" condition grade and a
condition grade of "Deke Mint." It's funny, I was just thinking about him
last week and I went to his website (which is still up and running). And I
noticed his last "update" was a little more than one year ago. One of his
latest acquisitions was another "Deke Mint" beauty:

Deke sold me a ton of stuff in the 1990s; the two standouts were a near mint
Queen Christina title card and an entire mint set of Gilda lobby cards, all
were eventually consigned to Bruce and Grey years ago. When he knew you
were serious, he would spend hours on the phone going over condition of his
paper by a fraction of an inch. He was a terrific gentleman and I never
faced his "grumpier" side, maybe because I was a reliable and "somewhat"
high paying customer of his. Not meaning to be indiscreet, but does anyone
know if he had been in poor health for some time? This comes as a big
surprise. -d.

Such sad news.........Deke was an original and a very colorful guy. Had
great conversations and bought many a poster, one of which hangs in my
living room every Christmas, Pluto's Christmas Tree. Will miss
him............Sue

In the late 80's and early 90's before Deke had moved to Washington, I
used to go up to his house in The Valley here in the L.A. area and sell him
posters I'd acquired. Had a lot of conversations with him not only about
posters, but about his years in the music business as well. He was the last
surviving member of The Corporation, a group of 4 or 5 Motown songwriters
who wrote many of the Jackson 5's biggest hits along with "Love Child" for
Diana Ross and many more. Later on, he became "The Cryptkeeper". He was a
really nice guy underneath his curmudgeonly exterior. Many times back then,
my son---who was 7 or 8 at the time--would go with me up to his house.
Through the years, whenever I spoke with Deke, he'd always ask how my son
Jack was doing. Just last year...I think in August...I bought a lot of
posters from him. At the time, I knew he was sick, but not to what degree.
His nephew, Scott, was helping him with his poster business. Will
definitely miss him. Deke was an original...truly one of a kind.
