Sometimes one does better assigning to Auction Houses despite the high commissions, particularly if it's in connection with items for which one hasn't a built-in market. My website and auctions has a following interested in acquiring movie-related posters. When I wanted to sell my Japanese artwork and ceramics, I consigned it to Sotheby's and Sotheby's reached a market I could never attain myself. Ditto the World War I posters I sold and some antique lamps I consigned to auction dealers who specialized in this sort of thing.
