Hi to you all

I also have great memories of the hobby from years ago well before the
internet.

On my regular trips to Los Angeles I would visit all of the many poster
related shops regularly and also attend the Ray Courts Shows as often as I
could. At the height of those shows they would have five rooms with many
dealers selling a huge range of posters.

I spent quite a bit of time in London during those years and I would often
spend a day traversing London's poster shops and galleries. Ed Mason had a
section in an Antique Gallery in The Kings Road in Chelsea and I learnt a
lot from him about British and European posters. He organized the
Westminster Movie Memorabilia Conventions that were held regularly in
London. I remember going to one back in the 90s and catching up with all of
the dealers there including Adrian Cowdry, John Kisch, Greg Edwards, Tim
Maddison and many more.

I used to visit Cinemonde in San Francisco and some of the other smaller
outlets where you could pick up some real bargains.

In the 80s and 90s in Australia, there were a few dealers who had retail
outlets and it was always fascinating to see what they had on display. Stars
Rock and Movie Posters in Sydney and Moviola in Melbourne were the two
biggest at the time. Keith Hutchinson from Stars used to send out a regular
magazine to clients and it is interesting to have a look through those
magazines now to compare prices. Harry Zac was another dealer in Melbourne
who seemed to have access to all of the great titles but he ultimately fell
on hard times and I haven't heard of him for years.

I used to advertise in Movie Collectors World, like many other dealers,
until ebay came along and changed everything. When I started on ebay back in
the 90s I used to run regular auctions and everything seemed to sell even
without pictures in the listings.

Things have changed a lot since then. There is so much more access to
memorabilia and it is obviously much easier for collectors to connect. One
thing that has really impacted the hobby is the volume of material that is
surfacing. Long time collectors parting with massive collections and new
collections turning up on a daily basis. I get a least one email a week from
people wanting to sell collections.

In recent times, I have taken quite a few trips to LA for the Hollywood Show
and it is great to be able to browse through the posters and lobby cards in
person albeit there are very few dealers at the show these days.

Although there has been a lot of change in the hobby it continues to be a
wonderful business to be a part of.

Regards

John

Hey Tom,

We've been around this hobby for a long time. All the names you brought
up have such great long time memories for me. Long before MoPo and the
internet, all who you mention and the likes of Todd Feiertag, Ron Borst,
Eric Caiden, Eben Rogers, Crowell and Lorraine Beech, Doug Hart with Backlot
posters, Rudy and Barbara, Jose Carpio with Cinemonde, and so many others
that have woven the fabric of this hobby. I dearly miss the ones that have
left us. I miss going to the shows and catching up with everyone. The
internet has changed all that. I still have the fondest memories of waiting
outside Larry Edmunds Bookstore in Hollywood early on a Saturday morning in
1973 waiting for them to open the doors and to get in with my list. I would
sit for hours on the floor going through boxes. Did the same thing at
Morrie's shop on Hollywood Blvd. Boy, those days were fun..........anyway,
it's always so sad to hear of someone passing but, for me, it cuts a bit
deeper when it's someone that I've shared this hobby with.

Best to all,

Sue Heim
