I was very anti-print for a very long time… I posted multiple rants on the various forums. Beanie babies V2.0… I was sure. I still worry about oversaturation of the key blockbuster titles. But am excited if some of these artists started latching on to some of the art films like Red Shoes and Days of Heaven which Durieux has done nicely. Prints also provide opportunity for art on TV shows and the new limited series trend.
There is some really nice art and there are new artists from all over the world stepping out in the private commission world. There is a thriving print community in the UK now that is far exceeding the art and printing of recent MONDO prints. I think the only mistake is thinking that MONDO is the only one out there worth collecting… Really MONDO as a brand has peaked IMO - in fact, they sold out to mega corporate Funko. I Also despise how MONDO has simply copied classic poster art like Jaws... I also feel that a shift will continue as new modern posters are riddled with suspect bootlegs & fakes now. Double sided posters are now easily reproduced and even harder to spot. The screen printing or giclee w/texture layers techniques are unique and hard to imagine being bootlegged. I've seen 11x14 fakes on eBay but anyone with sense would know to avoid. Prints are also limited runs with just a handfull of APs... There are enough collectors to make a 200 poster run of a hot title scarce. I have given in and see continued demand with limited supplies for these. It is also a entirely different set of collectors and they are mingling with us original poster junkies now for sure. I think a nice blend of both is now a good healthy collection.
