Thanks for the information. I did pick up a copy of the Guidebook and it
certainly appears as advertised. As I said in my original post I am a
relative newcomer to Pirsig but perhaps I should clarify. I DID read the
ZMM shortly after it came out and remember it as a powerful epistle but it
more or less languished on my shelf all these years. (But it now appears
that it took root in my mind--I used to tour the country on motorcycle from
the midwest. I now live in Petaluma, California)

One day recently, a financial columnist that I follow listed the top ten
books that every investor should read. One of them was "Lila." This must
have reignited the flames as I re-read ZMM while awaiting arrival of my
copy of "Lila." I immediately took up "Lila" and found it even more
thought provoking. Chapter 17 is (was) a "mind-blower."

I will now go through the "Guidebook" and revisit both of Pirsig's books
thereafter. In the meantime I will continue "lurking," reading
and...thinking.

By the bye, "Against the Gods" by Peter L. Bernstein is perhaps a good read
about Dynamic Quality v. Static Quality. Just a thought for your
consideration.

Again thanks for the advice!
