Renee, Our school has just bought into the Wilson Reading/Fundations Programs. I know that they base some of their rationale for their program on Reading First. I would love to know where I can find more info on the investigations that you mentioned. I want to have my own opinions backed up by sound research and info so that I can justify my teaching strategies to those in positions above me. Thanks, Kendra

That's what the listserv is for. :-) You ask an interesting question. If I had to put MOT in a "category" I would say it leans more toward the Whole Language perspective. This is why I am generally surprised to see recommendations for the University of Oregon materials, which to my knowledge are more Direct Instruction oriented and which are heavily touted by the Reading First people, who do not support Whole Language practices and have been known to actually criticize them. From what I have read and from my experience, I don't think Ellin Keene and/or MOT would be on the Reading First evaluators' short list. Other people may feel differently. However, right now there is an investigation of Reading First going on in Washington, D.C. You don't hear about it much in the news, and what you DO hear is very simplistic. But there are horror stories out there regarding the Reading First program, although for some districts it has worked very well, or at least that's what they say.
